Children building
their own house.
Matthew 7:25 (ISV) - The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, but it did not collapse because its foundation was on the rock.
"Why do you call me, Lord, Lord, and do not do what I say? I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice. He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete." Luke 6:46-49 NIV

This house was made from our foam blocks. They are 16" X 16" X 16". We went through the doorway and sat inside to hear the story. The roof was made from Styrofoam but you could use cardboard. I love using the foam blocks because they add another dimension to the story. You could make a circle or square with chairs and have your house inside of the circle.
If you don't have the children construct something out of the misc plastic "&" foam pieces you could make a house out of paper. You can get two houses out of a 8½" x 11" sheet of paper or light cardboard. Cut on the solid lines and fold on the dotted lines. The children should decorate these before they are folded into a house. Click here for the pattern of the house.

We put a large collection of misc Styrofoam packing, toilet paper rolls, plastic scoops, lids, and what ever I could find in a box in the middle of the room. We broke up the children into groups of two and had each group build a structure out of the material from the box. Cardboard pieces were also in the box that they could use to make roofs. The children were so busy building their houses we did not have time for a craft that day.
This is how I set up the visual for the story of a Wise Man. I used houses from a Monopoly® game and set one on a pile of sand and the other on a flat rock. I used a spay bottle filled with water to “rain” down on my houses. You will need to experiment with this first to see how high to make your pile of sand or what kind of sprayer to use. I placed the bowl on a cookie sheet to keep from getting the floor wet.
